Between 1912 and 1922, the Peabody Art Gallery hosted exhibitions of works by contemporary artists. Many works in the Peabody Collection were acquired from these exhibitions. Marylander Alice Worthington Ball, a frequent exhibitor at the Peabody Gallery, was a member of a group of women artists who called themselves 'The Six.'
